Atkins Diet – Food Groups

The Atkins Diet program teaches you to learn about the different foods you eat and to understand how they affect your body and overall weight.

Carbohydrates

The Atkins diet focuses on carbohydrates and shows you how they are nutritionally similar to starches and sugars. Although they carbohydrates give you a temporary boost in energy, this starts your body on a carbohydrate dependence cycle. You can keep carbohydrates in your diet but the key is to limit the amount and introduce them in a controlled manner to maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are two different types of carbohydrates, good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates. By understanding where foods fall in these two groups you can make smarter choices about the foods you are eating. Examples of foods with good carbohydrates are vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. Some foods, which have bad carbohydrates, are white rice, pasta and bleached flour.

Protiens

The Atkins Program recommends a diet rich with proteins to help build bones, organ and muscle tissue. Foods like meat, poultry, fish, cheese, and eggs are types of foods that fit into this group

Fats

Fats must be monitored closely while you are on the Atkins diet. Although fats are not always a nutritionally bad for you, it is important to choose fats that healthier for you than those that are not. Examples of these types of fats are olive oil, palm and vegetable oil.

Once you learn the importance of the different foods groups and how they work on the Atkins diet you can begin to make healthy choices. The core of the Atkins plan is to reduce your carbohydrate intake. Once you make this change your body will start to burn fat for energy. When are following the Atkins diet plan you will not only be losing weight, you will also be lowering your cholesterol level, blood pressure, and stabilize your blood sugar. It is for this reason the Atkins diet plan is seen as long term change in lifestyle and not just a diet.
