Causes of Childhood Obesity

The causes for childhood obesity general fall into two major groups environmental or genetic.

Environmental Causes

  • Poor diet, such as high fat, or high sugar foods
  • Lack of good protein and fiber foods to stimulate muscle growth and development.
  • Excessive snacking or overeating
  • Socioeconomic conditions – low income families don’t have access to good resources
  • Lack of activity – too much time is being spent in front of TV, computers, video games
  • Lack of regular exercise

Genetic causes

  • Some Genetic conditions give children a higher disposition to being overweight.
