Preventing Childhood Obesity

The problem of childhood obesity can result in life long health concerns as children and adolescents grow into adults. Most parents would like to do something but don’t know where to turn and what to do.
The foundation for a healthy lifestyle is the same for children as it is for adults. The first is nutrition. By removing or limiting foods that are high in fats, and sugar and substituting healthy proteins, fruits, vegetables and fibers parents will be taking the first step. Once nutrition has started to improve, then you should start to add in regular physical activity. This doesn’t have to be exercise in the conventional sense, although that is always an option. Many children are quite happy to play games or sports with parents or other children. This can also be accomplished with organized sports like baseball, soccer, or lacrosse, and classes such as ballet or karate. To encourage more physical activity many parents find it necessary to limit TV or computer game time.
