It doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to lose weight, get in shape, or just lead a healthier lifestyle, there are some mistakes that everyone makes and need to be reminded of from time to time.

Listen and Learn from experience: Those of us that have been exercising for a while may think we know it all. If you’re paying for a trainer or taking exercise classes pay attention to what the instructor is saying. A properly trained and certified teacher can teach everyone something and help you get more out of your current exercise routines.

Set Realistic Goals: You may start out exercising trying to get that perfect size body that your yoga or Pilates instructor has. For many people it’s not a realistic goal. You may become jealous or dejected at your lack of progress. Exercise is about harnessing positive energy for positive changes, so don’t focus or dwell on negative thoughts.

Eating More: The key to losing weight is simple use more energy than you food you take in. Don’t think because you spent an hour at the gym this morning you can have a nice chunk of devils food cake with your lunch. Skip the cake if at all possible or go for a really really small sliver instead.

It’s not a Competition: Going to the gym with a friend is great motivator. However don’t become upset if they lose more weight or lose it quicker than you do. Everyone is different and needs to follow their own goals, so don’t compare yourself to others as a measure of success.

Don’t be a Perfectionist: Many people get trapped in an all or nothing mindset, they do all the right things for three weeks have bad day and console themselves with a box of Entenmanns chocolate doughnuts and are ashamed to go back to the gym. Life is tough, it’s hard to juggle family, work and all of your commitments without something falling through the cracks. Forgive yourself up and get back on track as soon as possible.

Maximize your Exercise: You may go to spinning class to chat with that hot guy or get on the treadmill and watch Oprah. However exercising is really what you are there for not to socialize or watch TV. So make a date after your workout and use your Tivo your health should be secondary.
