Finding Your Motivation

One of the biggest factors for people trying to exercise and people who want to exercise and don’t, is finding the right motivation. Even the most experienced and in shape people often confess staying motivated to exercise is the most difficult part. For most of us the motivation to get in shape, exercise, and lose weight comes from external factors.

yoga-motivate.jpgMaybe you want to exercise to make you more attractive to other people and get more dates. Maybe you’re trying to lose weight for your wedding, high school or family reunion, or maybe you just want to lose weight so you will “fit in” better at your job or family. However people who exercise with these external motivations very often fail after a short period of time. They can keep the motivation however once they start approaching or reach their goals they often falter and give. Once they have lost the weight, gotten back from the honeymoon, or reunion they slowly return to their old habits, of poor eating and skipping exercise.

The reason for this failure is they weren’t doing things for themselves. If you exercise purely for yourself and your own goals many times you are able to keep yourself motivated for the long term. If you are eating right for yourself the chances of you going on eating binge at an all you can eat buffet is less likely. If you are exercising for yourself, you aren’t as concerned with just dropping 5 or 10 pounds, or getting those washboard abs, you are really concerned with improving your overall health over a lifetime. When you start to take a long term view about improving your body and your health, the small short term failures become less important in the scheme of things.
