many experts say the official advice which dates back to 1990 needs to be revised and updated to reflect out current health knowledge and understanding.

For a “low” body-mass index of less than 19.8, a gain of 28 to 40 pounds. For a “normal” BMI of 19.8 to 26, a gain of 25 pounds to 35 pounds. For a “high” BMI of 26 to 29, a gain of 15 pounds to 25 pounds. For a BMI greater than 29, a gain of at least 15 pounds.
