Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index or BMI is one of the primary factors used by health care professionals to judge if you are obese or not. BMI Calculators are use a simple math formula that take into account your height and weight to determine what category your body is in. The four general categories are underweight, normal, overweight, and obese.
While BMI is only one of the factors involved in assessing your overall health it is important. Studies have shown having a high BMI number can lead to any of of the following:
- Osteoarthritis
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Cardiovascular disease
- Some cancers
- Premature death
While BMI is not the definitive marker of overall health it can be an early indicator of problems that will affect your overall health. Some of the factors that can influence your BMI are:
- Diet
- Physical Activity
- Waist Circumference
- Blood Pressure
- Blood Sugar Level
- Cholesterol Level
- Family History of disease
If you have a BMI of 25 or above you should talk with your physician or other qualified health care professional to see if this presents a serious risk to your overall health.
