Adolescent or childhood obesity is a problem that is becoming a concern of more and more parents in modern society. Childhood is usually defined as ages 6 to 11, while adolescents are defined as ages 12 to 17. Weight management for these two different age groups is often addressed very differently. While making changes in the diet of your children and seeking ways to include as much enjoyable physical activity are good starting points, often there are other factors involved as well. Adolescents are especially vulnerable to the social issues concerning obesity. Over a prolonged period of time they run the risk of developing more serious problems such as bulimia or anorexia. If you become concerned that is occurring you should consult a specialist in these fields as quickly as possible.
