While many people believe that a deep bronze tan is actually caused by the suns rays burning the skin, it’s actually a defense mechanism that causes pigment producing melanin cells to be produced. Here are some additional tips to help you protect your skin.
- Asses your skin, know if you have fair skin or not, remember the fairer your skin the more sensitive it is to UVA and UVB rays
- Wear a hat, the skin on your face is more sensitive than other parts of your body
- Use a quality broad spectrum sunscreen with and SPF rating of 30 or higher. Be sure to apply the sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going into the sun to give it chance to absorb into your skin.
- The suns rays are most intense when it’s directly overhead (between noon and 3 pm). Try to limit the amount of time you spend outside in full direct sunlight.
- Sunscreen is only effective for only 2 to 3 hours be sure to reapply it regularly
- Be sure to reapply sunscreen when you exit the pool as it will no longer offer full protection
