Finding the Time to Exercise

If you’re having one of those days (or weeks) when your calendar is so full that you can barely schedule time for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, then you’re all-too-familiar with the modern conundrum of how to find time to exercise. Sometimes, we just can’t make it to the gym or our regularly-schedule pick-up game, but that doesn’t mean we can’t squeeze a bit of exercise into our day. I’m the queen of exercising on-the-fly, as you can also be. It’s not hard, and it’s actually kind of fun sometimes. You’re probably already aware of some of the follow tips, but hopefully there’s a hint or two that will spark some of your own exercise creativity.
- Take the stairs: Far too often, we’re in a rush and we head for the elevator or escalator. Reevaluate this decision. Most of the time, the escalator is clogged with human traffic. You have to wait for the elevator to arrive must often wiggle your way in, stuck between strangers. Taking the stairs is often the faster and always the healthier choice.
- Dance in public: Almost every time I’m shopping, whether it be for a new TV or the week’s groceries, music is playing on the store’s speakers. It’s upbeat music, chosen to put potential customers in a good mood. So dance! You don’t have to get your full boogy on, but just moving your hips and speeding up your step with get your heart rate up.
- Walk wherever you can: No matter where I’m going, I always prefer to walk. It takes a little longer than taking the bus or jumping in the car, but if you plan ahead, you’ll be able to afford those extra 15 or 20 minutes.
- Pump up the volume: I love to play music while I’m cooking or cleaning, and busting a move to my favorite tunes can help take the boredom out of such menial activities. And unlike in public, you can get as crazy as you want. Jump around, wave your arms, sing out loud if helps, but get your body moving however you can.
These are simple suggestions, ones that I implement everyday without even thinking twice. It keeps my heart rate up and my spirits high. Give it a try, invent your own, and find the time to do a little something just for you.
