The skin covering the head, the scalp, like other skin on your body has three different layers. The thin outer layer is the epidermis. The next layer consists of blood vessels, hair follicles and nerves. The last layer is made up of fat-filled cells and nerves. Seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff occurs when an overgrowth of yeast-like fungi stimulates the epidermis to produce cells more rapidly than usual. An overgrowth of yeast causes cells to move to the scalp’s surface at an accelerated pace. This results in shedding of flakes of dead skin.

If you scalp is persistently itching and flaking it may need help. If you see redness at your part and hairline, your scalp can be inflamed. If you always have the urge to scratch it, that is a sign of dandruff. It may also be very sensitive to the touch. When you run your fingers through it or brush it, it may feel tingly.

Although healthy scalps produce cells too, an overgrowth of yeast is triggered by a number of factors including hormonal imbalance and genetics. It is important to manage stress as anxiety aggravates inflammation. Try washing your hair daily for a week with your regular shampoo. The flakes you see may just be styling product build up.

To get rid of chronic flakes, use a conditioning anti-dandruff shampoo with anti-fungal tea tree oil or zinc. Follow with a regular conditioner. If an over the counter shampoo does not work after two weeks of use, see a dermatologist who may prescribe a stronger yeast-killing shampoo along with an antihistamine to calm the inflammation.

Your hair strands originate from a pouch-like depression in the scalp which is called a follicle. Your hair’s roots extend down into the follicle and widens into an indented bulb at its base. Also in the bulb is the center of hair growth which is the papilla. Working together these units form a healthy hair shaft of two layers. The outermost layer or coasting is the cuticle which lies flat when healthy. When damaged, this cuticle splits away from the shaft’s inner layer or cortex.

The signs that the cuticle is damage include lack of vibrancy in your hair. Hair that needs attention also has a dull, matte finish that does not reflect light well. Fly-away hair and frizzes also indicate a damaged cuticle. The most hydrated part of your hair is near your scalp where oil glands are located. Most of the time, the ends of your hair may be rough and dry.

To keep your ends in good condition, trim you hair ¼ inch every 6-8 weeks. This will make them less likely to split. Pulling hair in the opposite direction of the cuticle scales by teasing or back-combing, can expose the cortex to damage. In addition to conditioning after every shampoo, use a deep-penetrating treatment once a week to repair existing damage and help prevent future problems. As often as possible, style your hair naturally without heated appliances. But when using heated appliances or going swimming, apply a thermal protector to protect your hair. To encourage hair growth and bring oxygen and nutrient rich blood to you scalp, massage your scalp daily.

Sunspots are common in people with darker complexions or those people whose tan easily. They are signs of cumulative sun damage that appear as we age. Sunspots can become cancerous. There is no way to predict which sunspots will become cancerous. A dermatologist should conduct a full-body exam every year. Danger signs can include change in color or texture of the sunspots. Consistent follow up can help identify and remove any lesions if needed.

The appearance of sunspots can be minimized with a skin-lightening cream. Tri-Luma is a prescription medication which contains the lightening agent hydroquinone which takes three to four weeks. There are also over the counter products which contain 2% or less hydroquinone or other lightening agents. They take longer to work but are gentler on the skin.

A dermatologist can also perform laser treatment on sunspots. Laser directs a beam of concentrated light at the sunspot which causes laser energy to be absorbed by melanin in the skin. The sunspot will develop a thin scab, and then it will slowly fade. Usually only one treatment, at a cost of approximately $150, is needed. There is however a possible side effect from laser treatment which is that the sunspot may become even darker. This is seen in rare cases only.

To help minimize sunspots and prevent new sunspots, you should always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen. It should have a SPF of at least 15 and the ingredients zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and/or avobenzone, which all block the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Unprotected sun exposure can cause sunspots to reappear or get darker.

First it is important to accentuate the parts of your body you are happy with while drawing less attention to those parts that need work. If you have great legs, show them off in a suit with a higher cut leg. If you want to conceal your tummy but flaunt your bust, look for a style with a push-up bra as well as tummy panel which will flatten your midsection.

Choosing the right pattern can also help. A one-piece with a lighter color in the bust area and darker on the bottom will draw more attention to the top. To slenderize the torso, look for a pattern that will draw the eye inward. For an hourglass figure effect, look for a diagonal pattern or those with angled patterns across the body.

You are not limited to a one-piece. Now many two-piece suits can be purchased separately, so you can build your own perfect suit. This will also allow you to purchase different size tops and bottoms if needed. If you feel your tummy is not ready for a two-piece- try a tankini. This style has a longer top, almost like a tank top which helps cover your midsection. There are also many shorts bottoms which can hide your butt and thigh area.

Don’t forget a stylish cover-up. There are many great sarongs, tunics and sundresses that can fit every body style. If you want the focus to be on your upper body, chose a sarong in a dark solid color. A tunic can show off great legs. Sundresses are great for all sizes and are a great way to cover up as you head out for the beach or poolside.
