If you are a busy mom who has to juggle many different priorities, you may feel as if you don’t have enough time to keep yourself healthy. However, by changing your daily routine just a little bit, you can improve your health by leaps and bounds.

The first thing you want to do is watch what you eat and drink. Avoid foods that are high in calories and don’t give you any nutrition. Instead, look for good tasting foods that also have vitamins and minerals. Your diet should consist of balance meals of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fat and lean protein sources. Make sure to take a multivitamin that provides vitamins, minerals, calcium, iron and folic acid.

Also, be sure to watch what you drink. Instead of drinking soda or any other type of drink that is high in calories and sugar, drink water. If you drink a lot of water, you can lower the amount of calories you intake daily and you can also keep yourself from getting dehydrated.

Next, ensure that you are getting enough sleep. Busy moms have to work long hours and sometimes aren’t able to get a good night’s rest. If that’s the case, try to find time during the day to take a nap. Sufficient sleep is vital to stay healthy.

Lastly, remember to exercise. If you don’t have time for the gym, walking is a good exercise – especially for new moms trying to shed the baby weight. If you can walk for 30 minutes a day, you will be surprised by how much weight you can lose!

As we head into 2008, here are three healthy New Year’s resolutions to add to your list.

Watch What You Eat
Whether you want to lose weight or simply sustain your current weight, it’s important to watch what you eat. The easiest way to do so is to keep an eye on how many calories you are consuming daily. If you find yourself eating out a lot, you should at least try to limit your caloric intake. To do so, check the calorie count on your favorite foods to make sure you aren’t eating food on a daily basis that is overly high in calories. If you are on a more strict diet, you can set a daily calorie goal and then try to stick to that number.

Exercise More Often
Nearly all of us could afford to exercise more often. Exercise is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle. Even if you are happy with your weight, you should still exercise to keep your body healthy. Exercise is also a natural release for built up stress and anxiety. If you are just beginning your exercising, you can start off with just walking. Setting a goal to walk more often is a great way to get into the habit of exercising.

Smile
You can improve your quality of life and even live longer if you can just smile more often. Multiple studies have shown a correlation between happiness and overall health. It’s amazing how much healthier you will feel if you just make it a priority to smile and enjoy the small things in life!

In a recent study, Americans were found to have higher blood pressure, a greater risk of heart disease, and more arthritis than citizens of ten European nations. These chronic diseases are all associated with obesity and smoking.

What these statistics translate to is a U.S. healthcare budget $100 billion higher than it could be. Americans have an obesity rate of 33 percent, compared to 17 percent among Europeans.
So what can we do about it? To begin, what we’re already doing. Caring about health and fitness is half the battle, and being interested in healthy foods and different form of exercise is a great step. Of course, we have to act on these interests, making healthy food choices and exercising as often as we can.

Looking great is a fantastic benefit of being healthy, but there are also benefits that the eye can’t see: Obesity and smoking affect our longevity, and the Europeans in the study live longer than us by an average of up to 3 years. Furthermore, if we take care of ourselves now when we get older, we won’t suffer from diseases such as the painful arthritis and high blood pressure. And, as a gift to our pocketbooks, our national healthcare costs would go down significantly, lowering our premiums and our taxes.

Who could argue with that?

The stresses of modern life can increase the gap of awareness between our minds and our bodies. The pace of our living and are declining health both mental and physical are signs. Many of us are out of shape and overweight. We are also dealing with increased stress, heart disease and high blood pressure, along with depression and anxiety. We feel overstretched, committed to too many things. We are living in limited spaces both in our lives and in our bodies.

At work we are under fluorescent lights all day. We often sit in cubicles with computer screens without windows. We ride small elevators and breathe uncirculated air. Even before we get to work, we commute in a small vehicle as we fight to get to work on time. Most of our day, our time is spent in deprived spaces.

Even in our homes, we are creatures of habit and our habits lead us to live in less and less of our available space. We often sit in the same chair at the kitchen table. If you tried to switch everything would seem strange to you. Most of us have rooms in our homes that we hardly use. Do you usually watch television from the same spot on the couch? Our remote saves us a trip across the room to switch channels.

In our bodies, we also are living in fewer spaces. Our habits are limiting our body experiences. The cause of the declining health trend is not just diet and lack of exercise. The underlying problem is the mind-body problem. We are losing a vibrant sense of presence within our bodies.

We need a different motivation- a different type of realization. We need to realize our mind and bodies work better when they work together. Our bodies are so important to our overall productivity. They are an important part of our thinking process. Our bodies manage stress and are our sources of creativity and grounding.

Many go through life without thinking about our bodies. Everything is all caught up in our heads. We are focused on what needs to be done, what is happening now, what is not happening and who needs us. Our stress has increased and our quality of life has decreased. We need to live more consciously through our bodies. We need to do this no matter where we are or what we are doing.

To start, live in more spaces. If you sit a lot at work, stand up more. If you always usually sit in one spot, try another one. While waiting in line or anywhere stretch your body. While working at your computer, pause and stretch from your shoulder, through each arm and out through your fingers. As we are more conscious of our bodies, our inward presence begins to deepen as does the quality of our lives. We listen to our bodies more. If our legs are cramped we take the time to stand and stretch. This is more than just taking a break. It is living and working through both our minds and bodies.

Try brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand. While waiting in line stand with your legs apart. Stand up while working and sit on the floor while watching television. Eat slowly and chew your food more paying attention to flavor. Take longer showers. Wiggle your toes during a long meeting. Learn to lift your chest, soften your diaphragm and feel your legs and feet at the same time.

This will be the beginning of a new lifestyle where mind-body practice develops. Live in more spaces. When we do we discover our sense of center. We consciously and actively deepen the connection we experience between mind and body.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that over 15% of children and adolescents would now fall under the classification of obese. Currently 30% of adults are considered obese, and the trend is rising.

As health care costs continue to rise as the population ages, they are also going to rise society becomes more obese. The classical definition of obesity comes from having a BMI rating 29.9 or higher. The effects of childhood obesity can have repercussions that last into adulthood. Some of the effects are high cholesterol, high blood pressure. Additionally type II Diabetes which was previously thought to be an adult disease is now showing up in teens. In addition to physical conditions obese children can have low self esteem and develop social skills at slower pace due to lower levels of socialization and interaction. In extreme conditions these develop into sever life threatening conditions such as anorexia and bulimia, which should only be treated by qualified professionals.

Taking steps to prevent childhood obesity is always preferable to having to deal with an existing obesity issue. By laying down some good health guidelines parents can help their children reach these goals.

The primary step should always be nutrition. By eliminating or keeping unhealthy foods in home to a minimum you are more likely to succeed. This is the type of action that is going to require support from the entire family to be effective. Stock the house with lots of fruits, vegetables, and grain foods. When choosing proteins, limit cuts of meat with high fat levels, instead opt for healthier options like chicken, fish or lean cuts.

A healthy active exercise program is beneficial to everyone. To have the most success you should choose an activity that your child enjoys so they remain interested. Organized activities are a great place to start, consider things like little league, softball, soccer, or swimming. In addition to counting as exercise they will help develop social and team building skills.

We all have a lot going on. The more demanding your work and family life is, the more important it is that you find at least some time and energy for self-care and strengthening. All of your other life priorities depend upon your energy, vitality and resiliency. You may not be able to maintain an aggressive training routine or a perfect body-fat ratio but that is ok.

It is more important to spend some time every day putting you priorities and values in order. Find out what really matters to you. Sit and relax. Stop for a few moments and just think. Five downtime minutes a day to focus on your needs will make it more likely that you will do in a given day what you intend to do and not just what the day calls for you to accomplish.

Your family may be your main priority. At the same time your body is yearning to move and exercise. Get active with your kids. If you are busy with a project at work, cut down your workouts. But do not skip them all entirely. Abandoning exercise can leave you feeling mentally and physically dissatisfied. Fitting in some type of exercise routine is essential to your continued heath and sanity.

If you are being pulled in many different directions, take some time to clarify the values guiding each choice. Check with your heart and gut to see what they are saying about your options. Listen to them. You may have to shift your fitness urgency. Learn to enjoy exercise in smaller servings. Practice a less vigorous schedule and without aggressive training goals.

Many of us regularly deal with competing goals and time demands. These demands challenge us to maintain our personal fitness commitments while also respecting our other life priorities. These priorities will change with time and circumstances. Without a good balance of both fitness and life priorities you can find yourself feeling stressed out and dissatisfied. You may be trying to do too many things at once and not doing any of them as well as you would like to.
